STRIDE events:
themed library visits and guided walks

We are excited to invite you to a series of free events at the Mitchell Library this summer!

Join us for behind-the-scenes visits to the Mitchell’s fascinating Special Collections, followed by themed guided walks through Glasgow’s streets – all inspired by the city’s rich heritage.

Events take place in June, August, and September 2026. Places are limited, so be sure to book your spot.

Heritage discovery

Whether you are a lifelong Glaswegian or new to the area, STRIDE offers a fresh way to connect with the place you live.

Before each walk, participants explore hand-picked treasures from the great Mitchell Library’s Special Collections: historical documents, photographs, and records telling stories of Scottish histories and traditions.

Guided walks then bring these stories alive along the route, turning Glasgow’s streets into a living museum for everyone, and you don’t need any specialist knowledge to enjoy it.

Wellbeing

Are you looking to get a little more active, connect with new people, or simply explore Glasgow’s heritage through fresh eyes? These events are designed to leave you feeling better for having joined.

Participants will be supported by trusted library professionals and walk leaders.

Before and after each event,  the project team will check in on how everyone is feeling, physically and mentally – because understanding and measuring those wellbeing benefits is at the very heart of what STRIDE is trying to achieve.

About the STRIDE project

Funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and led by the University of Strathclyde in partnership with Glasgow Life, STRIDE is on a mission to show what libraries can do when they step outside their walls.

In Scotland, library-based walking groups for adults are still surprisingly rare – and STRIDE is here to change that. By designing, delivering, and evaluating a series of pilot events at the Mitchell Library, the project brings together the joy of walking, the richness of Glasgow’s heritage, and the welcoming space of a community library to support the health and wellbeing of people of all backgrounds.

Backed by Scottish Government priorities around walking and public health, STRIDE is building a model that any library across Scotland and beyond  could one day make their own.

Our team

The STRIDE research project is led by an experienced team of University of Strathclyde academics, Glasgow Life librarians, and qualified health walk guides.

We are passionate about libraries, heritage, walking, and wellbeing.

STRIDE events:
themed library visits and guided walks

Join us for free guided walks and library visits in Glasgow this summer!
We’re delighted to invite you to our free STRIDE events – a research project bringing together Glasgow’s remarkable heritage and the joy of walking. This summer, we are running three special events at the Mitchell Library, each combining an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to the library’s fascinating Special Collections with a themed guided walk through Glasgow’s streets.

What’s involved? Each session runs for two hours and includes a guided tour of the Mitchell Library’s Special Collections led by expert librarians, followed by a themed walk through Glasgow led by a qualified Glasgow Life walking guide. Every walk starts and ends at the Mitchell Library (we will head to Edward House on Sauchiehall Street if the weather turns!). You’ll also have the chance to wear a small activity tracker during the walk. Afterwards, relax over complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits, and take home printed materials on the Special Collections and your walk route.

When are the events? June, August, and September 2026 – one session per month.

Who can take part? These events are open to adults (18+) of all genders, with a reasonable understanding of English and reasonable levels of literacy, mobility, sight, and hearing.

How do I sign up? Places are free but limited to 15 participants per session, so early booking is essential. To register or find out more, contact STRIDE project lead Dr Perla Innocenti at the University of Strathclyde: perla.innocenti@strath.ac.uk

We would love to see you there!

STRIDE programme

What if your local library could inspire you to lace up your walking shoes, explore your city, and feel better for it? That’s exactly what STRIDE sets out to discover.

At its heart are three free events at the Mitchell Library, each pairing a fascinating behind-the-scenes visit to the Special Collections with a themed outdoor walk through Glasgow’s streets.

Two expert workshops will also bring researchers, health professionals, librarians, and community organisations together to turn those experiences into real recommendations for libraries across Scotland.

And because good ideas should travel, everything STRIDE learns – its findings, toolkit, and resources – will be shared freely online, in academic journals, and at conferences, so that communities far beyond Glasgow can benefit too.

Library events with guided visits to special collections and urban walks

One of the most exciting parts of STRIDE is how it brings Glasgow’s remarkable history right to your doorstep – or rather, right to your walking shoes.

Participants to STRIDE events will first get a special glimpse into the treasures held in the Mitchell Library’s Special Collections, one of the finest in Scotland. Carefully chosen materials will be on display for each themed event, and presented by librarians: think historical documents, photographs, and records that tell the stories of Scottish histories and traditions that shaped the city.

These themes then come alive along the route itself, with guided walks by Glasgow Move Leaders bringing the past to life as you stride through Glasgow’s streets. Far from being confined to a reading room, the city itself becomes a living, breathing museum, and you don’t need any specialist knowledge, kit, or experience to enjoy it. Whether you are a lifelong Glaswegian or new to the area, STRIDE offers a fresh way to connect with the place you live.

Taking part in STRIDE is about much more than just getting your steps in. Whether looking to get a little more active, connect with new people, or simply explore Glasgow’s heritage through fresh eyes, these events are designed to leave you feeling better for having joined.

Workshops with stakeholders

Alongside themed library visits and guided walks, STRIDE will also be bringing together a wider group of people who care deeply about libraries, walking, and wellbeing in Scotland.

We are hosting two workshops where experts, librarians, health professionals, community organisations, and policy makers will sit down together to share ideas, debate findings, and help shape the future of library-based walking groups across the country.

From national health bodies and disability organisations to refugee support groups and local community associations, these conversations will ensure that STRIDE’s recommendations are grounded in real experience and speak to the needs of everyone, especially those who are hardest to reach.

Because better libraries, better walking programmes, and better wellbeing should be for all of us.

Dissemination and outreach

STRIDE is not just about what happens during the events and workshops: it is about making sure the lessons learned reach as many people as possible. Throughout the project, we will be sharing updates and stories via this website, social media, and the Mitchell Library and Glasgow Life’s own webpages, so anyone can follow along and see how things are progressing.

We will publish our findings in academic journals and present them at professional conferences, so that researchers and practitioners across Scotland and beyond can benefit from what we have discovered.

Most excitingly, we will be producing a freely available toolkit – including walk guides, audio recordings, storyboards, and practical templates – so that other libraries and cultural organisations can take inspiration from STRIDE and run their own walking programmes.

The goal is simple: to make library-based walking groups a reality for communities everywhere, not just in Glasgow.
